Public art commission for a new public preschool at Hisingen.
In Hisings Backa, vegetables were once cultivated – even melons – which were sold in the city of Gothenburg. A few farms remain, while others live on through local place names. The artistic landscape “Hisingen’s Garden” at the new preschool Hoppet 2 brings traces of this cultivation history into the present. Boulders with sandblasted fruit and vegetable motifs are placed throughout the outdoor environment as details for children to discover. Stone blocks shaped with “water basins” and “sowing rows” support imaginative play, while a patterned stone surface beneath the pergola refers to the former agricultural fields.
All elements are made from reused stone, sourced from the site itself and from the City of Gothenburg’s stone depot. Natural boulders were transformed into vegetables and basins, while stone and concrete were repurposed into field-like ground patterns and playful “troughs.” The result is a series of tactile objects that connect past and present, inviting discovery, play, and conversation.
